[ALBUM] AL8 Speculation Thread

My two cents regarding lyrics:

I think it very much depends on the circumstance whether lyrics might be considered "bad" or "good". Most of LS's lyrics don't bother me despite them being rather simple, because, like others already pointed out, that's what she intended. The songs are mostly supposed to be fun, not much more, so why put some elaborate lyrics in there? As for "Avalanche" and "Dare To Love Me", yes, those lyrics are also quite simple, but I think they do a good job at bringing across the emotion without the listener having to be like "wait, what is she singing about? Let me ponder that for a moment." Her lyrics are usually pretty straightforward which lets the listener know immediately what the song is about. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely subjective. I think it works in some instances ("Avalanche", "How Does It Feel"), but not so well in others ("I miss you so bad/I don't forget you, oh it's so sad"). Others may disagree, of course. Like I said, it's very subjective.

What bothers me more is the fact that she keeps writing about the same topic over and over again, from the same perspective, using similar words, rhymes, and phrases. If she doesn't want to / can't change the topic, I'd at least love for her to be more self-reflective when writing about a breakup, and/or maybe try and see the other person's side of the story. I also wish she'd focus more on emotions, like in "Avalanche" (yes, I keep bringing that one up, it's just one of my all-time favourites 😁). I wish she'd expand her vocabularly 'cause I'm tired of hearing the same words and rhymes over and over again. And I wish she'd experiment more with different melodies and chord progressions (though I think that's not just a writing but also a production thing?). But I wouldn't mind so much if she kept some of the directness of her lyrics. I feel like that's sort of become her "thing". I don't think it would feel very "Avril"-ish to me if she suddenly started writing poetic songs, painting images and using metaphors and what not. That's actually something that has always bothered me a bit in "Falling Fast", that one line "like a sad song needs a sea of lighters". Something about it has never felt very "Avril" to me.
