- " Lavigne played The Matrix a song that she had recorded and really loved, a rock track in the vein of System of a Down. The lyrics were kind of 'I hate you, I hate you, hate you,'" The Matrix about Lavigne.
lol whenever I discover Avril's early ideas for her songs or b-side tracks, they are always like this
Didn't the demo song she played on the guitar in MTV Diary 2003 go like that too?
That was a song by the band GOB called Give Up the Grudge. They opened for avril for the TTSMU U.S. Tour and she also appeared in the video for the track.

I totally get what Lauren is saying though - I was 17 when Avril first came out, and she was marketed more like a band rather than a popstar. I actually thought she played guitar on Let Go and was really disappointed when I found out she didn't. Maybe you had to be there to understand it. I liked Avril because I thought she was like a girl version of Billie Joe from Green Day, and since he wrote his own songs and played guitar I just assumed she did too. Don't forget, her 'band' was a HUGE part of all that early publicity. I honestly thought they'd met and formed in high school just like a real band. Ultimately, that whole experience was a massive awakening for me in reality of marketing - and I think that what's Lauren's talking about in that quote. When I saw the Ashlee Simpson Show a few years later, I always wondered if that was more what Avril's formative years in the industry looked like - meetings with countless songwriting teams (including the Matrix), auditioning band boys for the right 'look' etc. I'm sure Alanis went through a similar thing too before 'Jagged Little Pill'. I think Avril got really screwed over by the way she was marketed in those early days. It was a double-edged sword - she was marketed as an 'authentic artist' who wrote and played all her material, and this is what drew so many girls like me in - but it felt like a huge betrayal when it became clear that wasn't the case. But when I really learned about it, I didn't feel betrayed by Avril as much as I felt betrayed by the music industry & the business side of the machine. So true. Her band were truly used as a crutch for the first campaign- to the point that they were always with her on red carpets, appeared in lots of photoshoots, in all her videos and even did some of her interviews with her for foreign press. I remember even at some point there was lots of mentions of her and her band just become known as The Lavignes (the comments were always made in jest, but they were spoken nonetheless). To me, it always seemed rather clear that there had been some kind of clear behind the scenes discussions for this to stop when UMS launched. No band in DTM, lots of emphasis on Avril by herself, reminders that she had her own bus, all that kind of stuff.

I never knew Avril played guitar on Runaway before. It must have been a one off performance or something she only did for the promo tour. Yeah, she only did it about 3 times maximum. Looking back, that whole TBDT summer promo tour was interesting because she was trying different things out, gauging how to perfect the songs live before embarking on the world tour.

What it comes down to, in actual fact, is that eating disorders are a personal, non-generic experience. It's a taboo, controversial topic to discuss whether or not they are a genetic trait, present at the time of a birth, therefore rendering them inevitable; or whether they are a product of surroundings and experience. There's no right or wrong, no yes or no. Lest we all keep Evan and his health and recovery in our thoughts and acknowledge the personal strength and growth that it must have taken to public admit to this.

It's a general misconception that eating disorders are solely based on an image or weight gauge. It normally initiates there, but it becomes an entity of its own and generally becomes a grave issue when th aforementioned habitual aspect of it kicks in. Even in Evan's case, it was clear that though he was unhappy with his weight when he was younger, it was his need for perfection that caused the disorder to flourish, and then his (and I hate to say this) lack of commercial success is probably what enoucraged the obsession- it becomes a sustainable thing that you can "control" and succeed at, a perfect distraction from what's really happening in life. It really should be an outdated idea that eating disorders are only for young girls with fashion magazines. That's like saying only people who don't wear jackets get colds.

Taylor was rocking out and being silly and stanning for Complicated for a few minutes. Everyone who is now insulting her is implying that Avril wasted her time traveling to San Diego in order to do this damage control performance. JUST ENJOY IT AND FOCUS ON AVRIL IF YOU HATE TAYLOR.

Definitely sounds fake, the "too far down" vocal doesn't really sound clear enough to be her. However, that channel does have a series of clips of Complicated with just the lead vocal stem and I've never heard that before! You can really hear how autotuned it is. So thanks for posting for that!

I started listening before anything even came out- my friend's uncle worked in radio and would slip us the mix CDs of new promo tracks that were to be added to radio in the coming weeks and Complicated was on one of them and I fell in love with it straight away. Waited for the single to come out and then for Let Go to come out. I've been a bandaids member since its creation as a little yahoo group. Bless.

It's worth noting that none of these were intended to be duets or were start-to-finish collaborations (I don't count O Holy Night because it's a classic) , except for with Chad, but that was rather last minute IIRC.

To be fair I haven't seen every single performance that she's ever done, so any performances I have seen of FTP she wasn't playing guitar. This must have been one of the rare times that she did. Not so rare- she played it every show of the first European leg of the bonez tour. You should check out some videos, there are some great ones!!

The only songs I know of that Av can play on guitar are: Complicated Sk8er Boi Mobile Unwanted Tomorrow Things I'll Never Say Nobody's Fool Naked Take Me Away Together Don't Tell Me He Wasn't My Happy Ending Nobody's Home Who Knows Slipped Away Girlfriend I Can Do Better The Best Damn Thing Hot What the Hell Smile Everybody Hurts 4 Real Darlin Rock N Roll Here's To Never Growing Up Hello Kitty And this is either because she has played them in concert, in music videos, live performances, or on her records. I've always personally doubted RnR and Smile because the parts in the videos where she is supposedly playing are a lot more challenging than she's proven capable of in the past, but I am willing and hoping to be proven wrong! Anyway, your list is missing Fall to Pieces!

Was that really Avril's cover? I thought it was fake? Yeah, it's really her. If you listen to it, you can hear Avril's LG style voice really prominently. I'm not sure what year she actually covered it or where she was. There are/were two versions of the cover- one acoustic one from New York (I believe) and one full band one from London, the show where she used her red Flying V guitar (a snap from which ended up being used for the single cover of Losing Grip). They were both performed on the Let Go promo tour.

Despite what we we re promised at the time, we never actually received any full, official versions of the performance. The audio we do have, I believe, was acquired by an Alanis bootlegging fan.

This is also funny because it's the lead up to the next time that avril meets this interviewer/presenter...
